Denkmalplatz Valbert
Denkmalsplatz
58540 Meinerzhagen
The memorial square looks back on a long history: the Romanesque church of St. Nicholas stood on this site until around 1870. Today, the Germania monument commemorates the citizens of Valbert who died in wars in the 19th century and gives the square a special historical significance.
At the bottom of the square, a pilgrimage stone points to the historic Heidenstraße. This centuries-old military and trade route led from Leipzig to Cologne via Meinerzhagen and was also part of the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela in the Middle Ages.
The monument square is also an ideal starting point for hikes. Several circular routes through the Ebbegebirge mountains start from here. An access route to the Sauerland-Höhenflug long-distance hiking trail is also signposted. Information boards on site provide an overview of leisure activities in the region as well as the route of the circular hike Valbert - Höhweg - Westebbe - Quellental.
By combining history, nature and recreation, the Denkmalplatz Valbert is an important landmark in the townscape of Valbert.
