St. Peter's Pilgrimage Church in Padberg (Old Church)

It was built in the 11th or early 12th century. A church was first mentioned in 1057. No documents regarding its construction exist. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of a predecessor building. The wall of the choir of this older church forms part of the later east wall. It may have been the Königshof chapel dating from 1030. The present church was built no later than 1120. A first expansion took place around 1180, and in 1220 another bay was added on the northwest side. A final expansion occurred in the 14th century.

St. Peter’s lost its function as a parish church in 1913 with the construction of the new parish church of St. Mary Magdalene. After that, it was used for a long time only on special occasions, such as the Corpus Christi or St. Anthony’s processions. Nevertheless, the church was preserved and extensively restored between 1997 and 2004, during which time it was also partially excavated. Since the restoration, monthly church services have once again been held there during the summer months.
