The hike begins and ends at the village square in Padberg. We walk through the village along Diemelseestraße toward the village outskirts in the direction of Bredelar. The trail then climbs uphill, passing along the slopes of the Galgenberg with views of the Hoppeck Valley and Beringhausen. We hike through a former mining area and reach the highest point of the tour: the Riepen. From up there, you have a magnificent panoramic view of the eastern Sauerland, including Giershagen and the historic town of Obermarsberg with its Stiftskirche and Nikolaikirche.
Now the trail leads us downhill past the Hackstöppel along narrow paths into the Diemeltal. Once there, it’s worth taking a detour to the Giershagen charcoal kiln site. Otherwise, we turn right and follow the course of the Diemel to the Niedermühle and the hiking parking lot there, where you can take a break before heading back uphill to Padberg.
The hike continues over the Diemel Bridge, then turns right and, a little later, sharply left, passing Gehelle and Kriesenberg. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the Rhene Valley and Waldeck.
The tour ends back at the village square in Padberg, where you’ll find a place to rest and the interactive village tour “The Lords of the Ring 2.0.” It’s well worth visiting the Baroque Kirche St. Maria Magdalena, Padberg Cathedral, and the over 1,000-year-old pilgrimage church of St. Peter.
