The Paderborn court master Heinrich von Westphalen acquired the Laer estate in 1602, and a representative manor house was built by him in 1608 using older building materials. The portal and the hood of the portal tower were built in 1669 and the castle was extended in 1764.
From the castle a beautiful walk leads to the Klausenkapelle with beautiful views over Meschede.
The complex is privately owned and cannot be visited.
