In the Upper Gate, approximately in the extension of the main street, was the second, eastern city gate. It closed the ring of walls that enclosed the town to the west, north and east. Along today's Hagenstraße, which used to be built only on the town side, the town moat ran to the Lower Gate with a marshy foreland. Ditch and swamp replaced the wall on the southern side of the town. The Spritzenhaus in the Obere Pforte also served as a town prison for a time.
