The Wasserschloss Hovestadt was first mentioned in a document in 1292. Because of its strategically favorable location at the Lippe crossing, it was destroyed several times in the Middle Ages, but always rebuilt.
The present moated castle with the main castle was built in 1563 - 1572 by Laurenz von Brachum. The outer castle was built in 1733 by Johann Conrad Schlaun. The Renaissance castle has a castle chapel in the baroque antechamber and a baroque garden from the 18th century, which was opened to the public in 1997 after restoration. The variety of building materials used for Schloss Hovestadt is remarkable.
The Counts of Plettenberg have been the owners of the castle since 1710; they have inhabited it since 1733, so unfortunately it is not possible to visit the interior.
