Herb garden Burg Altena

Garden

#deinsauerland / Outdooractive POIs / Herb garden Burg Altena

In the upper courtyard of Burg Altena, a herb garden with native herbs can be enjoyed with all the senses.
Sage, mint and lovage were recommended by the Reichenau monk Strabo in 840 in his book on horticulture, among other things. The herbs from the medieval monastery garden found buyers in the kitchen and hospital. In the style of these gardens, a bed has been planted at Burg Altena.

Sage, mint, lovage & co. grow in a bed in the upper castle courtyard. The small herb garden with 23 different plants is located near the entrance to the historic youth hostel. The approximately 26 square meter square is enclosed by graywacke stones. Guests at Burg Altena will find familiar kitchen herbs there, such as parsley, savory or chives. But there are also medicinal herbs such as St. John's wort, mullein and lady's mantle. If you are not familiar with the name "yellow-leaved thistle", the Latin name may help. With "Origanum vulgare Aureum" also the friends of Italian pizza will be able to do something. The names of the plants are written on slates. Not only visitors to Burg Altena benefit from the herb bed, but the adjoining restaurant also uses the herbs for its cuisine. In addition, the museum's educational department offers "herb tours", "making ointments and oils" or "cooking like in the Middle Ages".
