The origins of the Stiftskirche go back to Charlemagne. Instead of the pagan sanctuary of the Saxons, the Irminsul, he had a Christian church built here. Badly damaged in the 30-year war, it was rebuilt and provided with a magnificent baroque interior from the workshop of Heinrich and Christophel Papen.
