Developed into a drinking water well in 1878, the Charlottenquelle received its name in honor of the deaconess Charlotte from the children's sanatorium. In addition to its function as a drinking spring, the carbonic acid brine spring containing hydrogen sulfide was freely available to spa guests as a new natural remedy. Later, the spring sweetened.

The Charlottenquelle is part of the Sassendorf Salt Trails, a historical tour of Bad Sassendorf.
