The Fickeltünnesweg—Hiking on the Historical Trail Around Allendorf

This hiking trail is marked with a white "H" on a blue background and begins at the small market square in Allendorf. The historical hiking trail in Allendorf near Sundern was established in 2002 with 16 stops and was recognized and marked as part of the Sauerland-Höhenflug loop trail in 2013. The Fickeltünnes Hiking Trail takes you to chapels, coal mines, burial mounds, and places steeped in history. Thick wooden posts tell stories—some funny, some sad, and some curious—from the past.The trail begins at the market square in Allendorf. Here you’ll also find hiking information about the local trail network, the loop trail itself, and current information from the SGV.From the parking lot, Wenden right and walk through Marktgasse (Drei-Königs-Weg) into Altstadtstraße, passing the namesake of this trail—the Fickeltünnes. St. Anthony is often depicted with a pig (Low German: Fickel) and is the patron saint of the Allendorf church.The Fickeltünnes Hiking Trail leads up the Kaukenberg via the Way of the Cross. Here you’ll enjoy the first beautiful views of the Sauerland. There are three stations along this route before the loop trail arrives at Allendorf’s spacious park, which features a playground. The trail continues along the “Seven Sorrows of Mary” station trail—a unique feature in the Sauerland—to the Krusenberg. Here, the blue-marked loop trail meets the yellow-marked Sauerland-Höhenflug trail, which you’ll now follow toward Affeln. Beautiful narrow trails through forests and open spaces, along with magnificent views, await you on the Sauerland-Höhenflug trail all the way to the Hagener Kreuz. Along the way, hikers have stacked stones by the side of the trail to form interesting sculptures—feel free to join in! At the Hagener Kreuz itself, a round table with a bench invites you to take a relaxing break.Now you’ll leave the Sauerland-Höhenflug and head down into the “Krähe” valley, where a small stream meanders enchantingly through a meadow. Following the small stream, the loop trail runs along a narrow path through a spruce forest and reaches State Road L 619, which you’ll need to cross. The Fickeltünnes Hiking Trail now leads along the former Hermann Mine—which is now a nature reserve—and through spruce forests to State Road L 842, which you must follow briefly toward the small village of Hüttebrüchen. After just a few meters, however, the trail turns left again onto a forest road. The landscape now opens up. Meadows, fields, and rows of trees alternate, repeatedly offering wonderful panoramic views. The so-called “Allendorf Bahnhof” on the Ödenberg is also located within a vast area affected by Storm Kyrill. A shelter offers you another place to rest. As you pass through the “Alte Feld” and along the “Eichenberg,” you’ll be treated to magnificent views. Soon you’ll reach the nature reserve at “Steinert.” In the spring, countless snowdrops and primroses bloom here.Since the spring of 2014, the Steinert Nature Reserve has gained a new attraction. For the first time in over 70 years, goats have returned to the nature reserve to graze on the bushes and shrubs, thereby protecting the Steinert from the threat of overgrowth. Since then, this work has been carried out by Valais Blackneck goats, a breed threatened with extinction. The Fickeltünnes Hiking Trail leads along a side path into the goat enclosure and on to the summit cross, where you’ll once again be treated to a beautiful view of Allendorf and the entire hiking route. The path that curves around the Steinert also runs partly through the goat enclosure.You’ll now reach Allendorf, the starting and ending point of the hike.Here is an overview of the stops you’ll visit along the hike:1.
