The circular hiking trail starts at the Kohlberg hiking parking lot. A large board there provides information about the route and the special features to be discovered. This also includes the Neuenrader Bürgerwald forest. Hikers can find out more about the local area at the individual stations. The trail is marked with the hiking sign A7.
First, the trail continues straight ahead along the main hiking trail and the Sauerland-Höhenflug long-distance hiking trail past the avenue of trees of the year to the SGV memorial. During a rest at a seating area on a particularly beautiful spot - a kind of balcony - hikers learn something about the changing landscape. The trail continues along the Babywald forest past a hollow path to the Iserlohn Post and Iron Trail.
At the next junction, you leave the Sauerland-Höhenflug. Hikers turn right and come to the Neuenrader Bürgerwald forest. A total of 6,200 trees were planted on an area of 1.3 hectares in 2023 and 2025. The trees were donated by interested citizens. A covered bench invites you to take a break and a board provides information about the Neuenrader Bürgerwald.
At the next crossroads, the path leads right along the Gelmecke wetland biotope. Go straight ahead over the next crossroads to the forest cemetery. Here are the graves of foreign forced laborers. They died in 1945 in the SGV-Kohlberghaus, which was temporarily used as a hospital.
A few steps further on, a plaque provides information about the storm Kyrill, which caused major damage in the region in 2007. The trail then leads to a land fortification that is clearly visible in the landscape and is explained. The trail then leads to the ski slope, which can be skied on in good snow conditions. Whether winter or summer - the view is wonderful on a clear day. At the end of the ski slope, the Dahle II mine is still clearly visible.
At the end of the home trail, hikers reach the Quitmannsturm, a lookout tower on the Kohlberg, which at 514 m above sea level is the highest point in Neuenrade. It is well worth the climb. The panoramic view makes up for the effort and QR codes are used to name the mountains that can be seen and also show views from the year the tower was built in 1986.
At the end of the tour, you can stop off at the nearby
Kohlbergalm restaurant. It is within easy walking distance of the Quitmannsturm.
