Willibaldstollen III (Mining Trail 30)
(auf der Halde, es gibt keinen Strassennamen)
59909 Bestwig
The Willibaldstollen III (469.7 m above sea level) used to be the main haulage route for the Dörnberg and Aurora mines, which were connected underground. While the ore was transported here, most of the waste rock ("tailings") was brought to the Halden via the Aurora shaft to relieve the burden on the conveyor.
Initially ponies and later horses pulled the wagons, before diesel locomotives took over from 1933 and battery-powered locomotives from 1950. Many lines had to be straightened to accommodate the longer trains. In 1962, line haulage in the adit was discontinued and replaced by modern shaft haulage.
Until the mine was closed in 1974, the ore was transported via the blind shaft and Margaret shaft for processing. Today, the tunnel is used for ventilation and as an emergency access for the visitor mine.
