The "Westernkottener Warte" brine spring was tapped in 1845. Until 1949, the very rich brine spring was mainly used for salt extraction. Today, the brine is used exclusively for bathing and for health-promoting outdoor inhalation at the two Gradierwerks.
The "Westernkottener Warte" brine spring was tapped in 1845. The borehole is 78 meters deep.
It was discovered by chance at the time, as they were actually looking for rock salt. Instead of coming across rock salt, this brine spring was drilled by complete surprise, shooting out of the borehole in a large fountain.
Until 1949, the very productive brine spring was mainly used for salt extraction and also for medicinal purposes. With the cessation of salt production in Westernkotten in 1949 and the founding of Solbad Westernkotten GmbH the following year in 1950, the former salt village of Westernkotten was finally transformed. Since then, the brine has been used exclusively for bathing and for health-promoting and health-preserving purposes at the two Gradierwerke.
