Muckenbruch March

The Muckenbruch march leads from the spa gardens past the two large historic graduation towers and the Kneipp facility with barefoot path. The route runs along the trout path over the bridge on the Gieseler directly into the "Muckenbruch" nature reserve and former moorland mining area. The trail then leads through the town center and along the spa promenade back to the fountain in front of the Hellweg-Sole-Thermen.

There are several places to stop for refreshments along the way, making it easy to combine the hike with a break.

The name Muckenbruch presumably goes back to the earlier use of peat as fuel. The brick-sized pieces of peat that were cut out of the moor for this purpose were known as "Mucken". With the upswing in salt production, the demand for peat initially continued to rise. Later, however, other fuels such as hard coal were increasingly used, so that peat extraction became less important. Today, only bathing peat is extracted from the Muckenbruch, which is used as a remedy - for example for peat packs.
