In Arnsberg, the Spanish conceptual artist Santiago Sierra created a remarkable light installation that calls on modern people to stand up for open cities and a united Europe and to counter any kind of exclusion. This contemporary art impressively shows how the urban space is being transformed by transporting the history of the medieval town with the Alter Markt and the classicist elements of the Neumarkt into the modern age.
The Spanish artist called his work "The Debt" to address the immaterial burden that the old city gates carried. These gates were once barriers that excluded hundreds of thousands of people, including many Jews. The "Lichtpforte" contrasts symbolically with the imposing medieval walls: a constant plea to overcome borders and promote unity.
Formed by delicate floor lights integrated into the paving, the "Lichtpforte" traces the original city walls - a subtle but powerful reference to the past. In winter, the lights fascinate with a special charm that permeates the cool, clear winter night with a touch of warmth and history. This installation offers no room for exclusion, but literally opens the gates to a historical dialog for the viewer. It recalls history with luminous intensity, while at the same time urging openness in the present. A visit to the wintry backdrop of Arnsberg thus promises an immersive cultural experience.
