The storage area in Lippstadt's Altstadt used to be just a 100-metre-long street with buildings on one side. There were no buildings on the right-hand side facing the Lippe. The people of Lippstadt knew how to take advantage of this.

From storage yard to port: Lippstadt's maritime history

The old storage yard: a dead end with a future
Who would have thought that a small street with buildings on one side would develop into a flourishing port? With its direct location on the Lippe, Lippstadt's Lagerplatz offered the perfect conditions for shipping.

The starting signal for shipping in Lippstadt
On March 18, 1819, Lippstadt made maritime history: the first cargo ship docked at the Lagerplatz. With 600 hundredweights of salt and 30 passengers on board, it set off for the Lower Rhine. The following months showed the potential of the new port: almost 50,000 hundredweight of goods were handled here by December 1819.

Change and adaptation of a road
The construction of the lock in the Grüner Winkeln in 1830 changed the use of the port. Instead of large cargo ships, it was now mainly sand barges that dredged the Lippe. Until 1972, the Erdmann company shaped the image of the port with its sand dredging operations.
