St. Mary's Church is one of the most impressive buildings in Lippstadt. Construction of the church began shortly after the town was founded in 1185. The founder of the town, Bernhard II, was able to consecrate St. Mary's Church himself in 1222 in his function as Bishop of Selonia.
After its construction, the church in Lippstadt's Altstadt shaped the construction style of Romanesque churches beyond the Westfalen region. Today, St. Mary's Church amazes many people with its size and variety of architectural styles. The Gothic sacrament tower and the Baroque altar in particular make a visit to this church worthwhile.
