The Catholic Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Schmallenberg-Gleidorf was built as a new building in 1984. It replaced the previous parish church, which could no longer be restored. The building follows the concept of an open, adaptable spatial structure.
The main hall offers space for around 300 people. The tent-like roof symbolizes the wandering people of God. Other places of worship include the crypt under the altar and the open Anno Chapel under the bell tower with stained glass windows from the previous building.
Elements of the old furnishings have been integrated into the church: Graywacke walls, baroque high altar, free-floating crucifix, copper baptismal font and a statue of the Virgin Mary. A triumphal cross from around 1380 with a martyr's relic is embedded in the contemporary altar.
A restored organ from London was added in 2009. Interactive technology with a controllable light and sound system allows individual access to the liturgy. The church combines historical substance with a modern form of expression.
