Powder tower
Ecke Pulverturmstraße/Klosterweg 3
59872 Meschede
The powder tower in Meschede is an important testimony to the local military history of the 19th century. Built in 1825, the tower was used for the safe storage of gunpowder for the Prussian Landwehr battalion stationed in Meschede, which was trained in the town between 1820 and 1860.
At the time of its construction, the tower was deliberately located outside the town limits to protect the population from possible explosions. The facility was built according to military safety standards and was an indispensable part of the military infrastructure for several decades.
Today, the powder tower is a rare example of this type of construction and is protected as an architectural monument. It illustrates the time when Meschede was a garrison town and makes an important chapter of the town's history visible in the public space.
