Heinrich von Westphalen, a court official from Paderborn, acquired the Laer estate in 1602. In 1608, he had a stately manor house built using existing structural elements. The portal and the dome of the portal tower were added in 1669. The castle complex was expanded in 1764.

A beautiful walking path leads from the castle to the Klausen Chapel, offering lovely views of Meschede.

The estate is privately owned and is not open to the public.

Directions

Bus line C4, departing from the Meschede bus station, stops at Laer. It is within walking distance, but can also be reached by crossing the Ruhr River.
