The hollow ways go back to the former long-distance road from Siegen to Hagen, which was part of an extensive transportation network. This connection extended south to the Frankfurt area and led north to the Netherlands. For centuries, traders, travelers and wagons used this route, which led to the formation of the deeply incised hollow ways.
The traces still visible today are unusually pronounced: Several parallel routes and the considerable depth of the cuttings illustrate the intensive use and great importance of the road. Its origins can be traced back at least to the High Middle Ages, but it is possible that the origins go back even further.
Remains of a Landwehr can also be seen to the west of the Hohlweg bundle. This once served to secure the road and protect it from raids or unauthorized use. Together, the hollow ways and Landwehr form a vivid testimony to the history of medieval traffic and defenses.
Due to their cultural and historical value, the remains of the hollow ways and the Landwehr are now listed as historical monuments.
