"Anno 1713, St. Nicalaus pray for us and help us over water and land", reads the inscription on the "Stone Cross" monument. It is possible that the current location, not far from this hiking parking lot, was once a resting place on the long-distance trade route between Siegen and Paderborn. The stone cross was erected there in honor of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of merchants and carters, and a plea was made for a safe journey. Even today, the historic road is still used as a hiking trail (Kriegerweg).

Circular hiking tip Oberhundem North Tour: The "Steinernes Kreuz" hiking parking lot is also a good starting point for the approximately four-hour Oberhundem North Tour, which takes you to the Alpenhaus, where you can stop for refreshments. Further information about the hike can be found here.

circular hiking tip Saalhauser Höhenweg: Passing the Steinernes Kreuz, the loop leads you through rustling forests and to great views, which can also be enjoyed from comfortable benches.
