Gradierwerk I was built in 1835 and used for salt production until 1949. Today, it is used for therapeutic open-air inhalation and has been listed as a technical monument on the city of Erwitte’s list of historic sites since 1984. Measuring 120 meters in length, 12.5 meters in height, and with a gradation area of 2,400 m², it is the largest spa park Gradierwerk in North Rhine-Westfalen.
The way it works is both traditional and fascinating: brine flows from the spring through pipes to the Pumpenhaus and is pumped from there into the water channels on the Gradierwerk. From above, it trickles down over the dense walls of blackthorn brush. As it flows down, some of the water evaporates—creating fine salt aerosols that enrich the air with a soothing freshness. Brine that has not evaporated is collected in the catch basin.
The scent of salt, the gentle trickling, and the clear, mineral-rich air create an atmosphere that immediately evokes the sea. Here, it’s easy to breathe freely, clear your airways, and relax both body and mind.
