History of the synagogue
In the Middle Ages, Jews were a minority that was legally, religiously and socially discriminated against. They therefore met in secret for their religious practice. During the Enlightenment, which began around 1700, the situation of the Jewish population steadily improved and they became equal. As a result, the Jewish community in Lippstadt decided to build a meeting house. Inaugurated in 1852, the synagogue was more than just a house of prayer. It served the Jewish community as a center for religion, education and culture.

The synagogue today
Only a few remnants of the once magnificent synagogue remain. Nevertheless, it stands as a memorial to Lippstadt's Jewish history and the crimes of National Socialism. The preserved outbuilding, the ruins and the synagogue garden now serve as a place of remembrance and for cultural events and exhibitions organized by a dedicated association.

Significance for the city
The former synagogue is an important part of Lippstadt's history and identity. Tragically, it fell victim to the destructive rage of the National Socialists on November 9, 1938 during the Reichspogromnacht. It is a reminder of the diversity of the city's society and a reminder to resolutely oppose intolerance and hatred.
