Former settlement of smelter workers (Mining Trail 23)
Werdern
59909 Bestwig
The single-storey houses to the left of the Valme were built in 1854 and served as housing for the ironworks workers - four families per house. The first floor housed living and utility areas, while the bedrooms were on the upper floor. The small windows and narrow rooms still show the limited living conditions today.
The houses are uniformly built: Half-timbering on graywacke with white plastered brick fields, roofs made of cardboard or slate. Each dwelling had stables, sheds and a draw well. Toilets were outside and food was largely supplied by livestock and kitchen gardens.
The settlement gives a vivid impression of the everyday life of workers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its proximity to the smelting works, the uniform building style and the communal way of life show the close connection of the residents to the mining industry.
