In the mid-1980s, the Werkhof took over the dilapidated building complex to restore it and develop it into a meeting center. It was supported by unemployed men and women who found a training place in the commercial and industrial/technical sectors.
On four levels
Today, the Kulturzentrum Werkhof e.V., located not far from the Hohenlimburg train station, is home to musicians, artists and theater and dance groups on an area of around 1000 square meters. They find the very best conditions on various levels.
In the festive Werkhof hall with a stage and seating for up to 250 people, in the cozy catacomb (up to 300 standing room), in the venerable old pub (80 seats) or under the glass roof of the courtyard in the outdoor area. Each location offers a special ambience for conferences, seminars, music, cultural and dance events or private celebrations. Modern sound, lighting, camera and video technology, which even enables live broadcasts, ensures almost perfect conditions.
Music and cabaret
Regional and national music groups, cabaret artists and comedians are happy to use these facilities. Up to two events take place on average per week. Often with a "sold-out house". Jürgen Becker, Joe Bausch and Ulla Meinecke are among the best-known artists who are regular visitors to the Werkhof.
Theater and dance
Regional theater groups also appreciate the special ambience of the Werkhof as a site of former industrial culture. These include the "Theater unterm Schloss", the amateur theater "Mummpitz", the "Pfifikuss-Theater" and the up-and-coming theater group "Klamauk".
A veteran of the cultural center is Susanne Langmann-Eyer with her dance floor, which combines special elements of the French-Italian and Russian (dance) schools (technical term: Waganowa). The experienced dance teacher pays particular attention to the promotion of young dancers: this includes pre-school ballet, early dance education, communicative dance and courses for gifted dancers.
Salsa events are also offered on Sundays.
