“Schlaraffische Fechsungen*—almost like a poetry slam”
* Fechsung: Original works of poetry, prose, and music
So-called “Fechsungen” are a regular feature of Schlaraff meetings. They are either based on a given theme or are entirely original. They can range from contemplative to very humorous, or consist of original lyrics set to well-known melodies. In the process, unexpected talents sometimes come to light—ones the author didn’t even know they had! Occasionally, there are also literary contests with winners—similar to a “real” poetry slam.
In the relaxed atmosphere of the Haus Hövener Museum, Suerland Schlaraffen will recite texts they’ve written themselves or by other authors, creating an entertaining evening. The organizer, “Schlaraffia Im Suerland e.V.,” is part of the global federation “Allschlaraffia,” a German-speaking men’s association represented on all five continents. The federation was founded in 1859 and has been active in Brilon since 1985. Schlaraffia is a wonderfully vibrant stage—with enthusiastic participants—a community of open-minded, cosmopolitan friends who can still laugh at themselves. The ideals of the Schlaraffen are art, humor, and friendship.
