What to do with the classics? Especially when they seem as remote to us as Adalbert Stifter's thoughtful linguistic art?
Philipp Hochmair, castle actor, this year's "Jedermann" at the Salzburg Festival and TV star ("Blind ermittelt"), dares to do anything in this production. He embeds his reading of "Hagestolz", the most sinister and disturbing of all the great Austrian's tales, in a radical, modern soundscape.
With his band, the "Elektrohand Gottes", he lays darkly wafting synthetic sounds under the tale of the young man who encounters a similarly embittered, world-fleeing figure in his uncle as Bernhard's "Minetti" - and unveils a powerful, timeless, even radical classic.
