Mandinka Songs
The Mandinka people are an ethnic group in West Africa whose members identify as descendants of the Kingdom of Mali. They possess a centuries-old cultural tradition in which musicians and storytellers—known as griots—serve as custodians of history, genealogy, and oral tradition. Mamy Kanouté, or Cissé Diamba Kanouté, comes from a renowned family of Mandinka griots. At the age of 14, she was discovered by Baaba Maal, with whom she gained international recognition as a backup singer and has been performing for two decades. Together with Bao Sissoko (kora), Oumar Sall (guitar), and Wouter Vandenabeele (violin), Mamy Kanouté carries on the Mandinka griot tradition in a contemporary way.
