"Diether Pelz - On the centenary - Works from the estate"
Diether Pelz, artist's name "ther", was born on May 2, 1925 in Senftenberg, Kalau district, and grew up in Reichenbach. As a teenager, he fought in the war, came to Lippstadt in 1948 after being imprisoned in England, disillusioned, and from then on devoted himself to the "finer things" in life, including the fine arts. He was unable to find funding to study art; the grammar school art teacher Benno Lippsmeier took him on as a private pupil in his studio in Geseke. He financed his livelihood through advertising commissions, which increased with time and success, so that advertising consulting for companies in the region eventually became his professional focus. Initially living in Poststraße, then for a long time in Brüderstraße, he had his studio apartment at Ostendorfallee 5 in the center of Lippstadt for decades. The Wilhelminian-style Villa Linhoff also offered space for a classroom: for decades, Diether Pelz trained generations of young artists from Lippstadt in figurative drawing on a voluntary basis, free of charge and as preparation for the portfolio or entrance examinations for art colleges and colleges of graphic design. Alongside his job and promoting young talent, he had little time for his own painting. His skillful drawings and concise texts secured his income and livelihood and remain in his memory. The exhibition shows works from his estate. "ther" died on his 80th birthday, May 2, 2005.
