Cissy (Pauline Collins), Reginald (Tom Courtenay) and Wilfred (Billy Connolly) are staying at the comfortable Beecham House for retired opera singers. Every year on 10 October, Giuseppe Verdi's birthday, the three of them organize a concert at which donations are also collected. It is the event of the year and everyone looks forward to it. But this year, Jean (Maggie Smith), who was once married to Reginald, arrives at the home and upsets the balance. She acts like a diva but doesn't want to sing.
