On Sunday,9. February, the exhibition "Burning warm soul. Painting and Porcelain Objects" by the Chinese-German artist Yafang Qi will open. In addition to charcoal drawings, ink paintings and oil paintings, the exhibition also includes posters, calligraphy, poems and other porcelain objects.
Born in 1965 at the beginning of the so-called "Cultural Revolution", Yafang Qi grew up in Anhui province. After eight years as a car mechanic in a truck factory, she made it to the university in Jingdezhen, the important former imperial porcelain city, via an external route and studied design and painting there. She lived and worked in Berlin from 1995 to 2024.
Yafang Qi grew up in turmoil and after studying traditional Chinese art intensively, she found her own ways of expressing opposites and suffering, but also joy, change and healing: in words, writing, pictures, sculpture, tea ceremonies, kung fu and music. It was no coincidence that she had an aphorism hanging in her studio that reflected her philosophy of life: "When the world darkens, harmony becomes revolution".
In China, calligraphy, painting and poetry have always been interwoven with Taoist, Confucian and Buddhist philosophy. Making music (especially playing the qin zither) is also one of the arts that were indispensable for self-cultivation and artistic communication.
With this in mind, Dr. Dorothea Schemme will read from the artist's life and work at the exhibition opening, accompanied by Ulrike Mütze (flute and Renaissance lute).
The exhibition is on display at the Oase until 13 April.
