The inhabitants of the fictional state of Andorra have nothing against teacher Can's foster son Andri - he is just different because he is a "Jew". At the same time, anti-Semitism is rampant, some of which is shown quite openly, but most of which is hidden. Andri begins to accept that different rules apply to him. is. When Andri wants to marry the teacher's daughter Barblin, a long-kept secret comes to light: Andri is the illegitimate son of the teacher and therefore by no means a Jew.
But nobody seems to want to hear it. Andri's biological mother turns up. So does an army of soldiers. When Andri's mother is killed, they blame him. The teacher now wants to publicly acknowledge his son, but the new occupying power installs a "Judenschau". Andri is identified as a Jew and singled out for execution...
Max Frisch's parable about everyday racism, exclusion and anti-Semitism impressively shows how a society loses itself in fear and how the exclusion of the supposedly foreign increases more and more. A timeless play that illustrates how inhuman mechanisms work.
