There are an estimated 1.3 million cultural monuments in Germany, including individual monuments as well as entire historic town centers. There are 97 listed buildings in the municipality of Kirchhundem . The largest and certainly the most significant in historical and political terms is the Wasserschloß Adolphsburg in the upper Hundemtal valley.

The builder Baron Johann Adolph von Fürstenberg already knew where it was most beautiful back then, namely in the upper Hundem Valley, where he had the main house of the Adolphsburg castle named after him built in 1677 in a first construction phase. The magnificent, castle-like Wasserschloß is attributed to the master builder Ambrosius von Oelde.
At the beginning of the 18th century, a north wing with a chapel and a south wing were added. The Adolphsburg beamed ceilings are a special feature of the building. First a main residence, then a hunting lodge in later generations. It was used as a padre school until the mid-1950s. It then fell into disrepair and was converted into and rescued by an owners' association in 1985. Without the Wasserschloß Adolphsburg homeowners' association, the castle would certainly no longer exist today as an inhabited building.

After last year's great success, the homeowners' association, represented by the Förderverein Wasserschloß Adolphsburg e.V., is now taking part in the Open Monument Day for the second time with a colourful programme that includes the entire open outdoor area.
Areas around the castle that are otherwise reserved for the owners are accessible. There will be historical tours around the building. The popular castle café, set up especially for this day, offers coffee and waffles as well as cool drinks and fresh grilled sausages. A wood artist will be selling her works.
An event for young and old castle lovers. For the first time, there will be a children's painting competition.

The DEUTSCHE STIFTUNG DENKMALSCHUTZ has provided extensive information material about its work as well as colouring sheets for children and a competition.

On 08.09.2023 from 11 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., a colourful program awaits everyone with plenty of "food" for the hunger for knowledge about Adolphsburg and against normal hunger.
Please visit the Open Monument Day and support the work of the Förderverein Wasserschloß Adolphsburg e.V. - the association will not only thank you with good food at fair prices, but also with some information such as the great fire in the outer bailey or why the roof of the main house is sagging.
