Nature meets art on the WaldSkulpturenWeg.
What do you get when internationally renowned artists interpret the eventful history between the Protestant-influenced Wittgenstein and the Catholic-rooted Sauerland? Quite simply: eleven incomparable sculptures, sculptures and installations on the WaldSkulpturenWeg that polarize and stimulate discussion. Form your own opinion. Walk the 23 km long WaldSkulpturenWeg from Bad Berleburg to Schmallenberg. A "blue gate on a white background" leads you along the ForestSculptureTrail to eleven sites where art and nature come together.

Further information about the WaldSkuplturenWeg and the artists can be found here.
The WaldSkulpturenWeg, which was created between 2000 and 2010, runs between Bad Berleburg in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district and Schmallenberg in Hochsauerland. Following the Rothaarsteig access paths of the two towns, it covers almost 23 kilometers along the Rothaarsteig ridge, where it also crosses the Rothaarsteig at Kühhude.
Internationally renowned artists have created a unique art trail, at least in Germany, with their works of art along the edge of the WaldSkulpturenWeg.
All 11 works of art have now been completed in this project, which has been underway for years. The artists were given time to create something first-class in the end. The landscape surrounding the artworks is mainly characterized by spruce trees in the ridge areas and mixed forests in the valleys. The hiking cab (Saturdays) operated by Schmallenberg Sauerland Tourism offers a convenient way to get from Schmallenberg to Bad Berleburg.
In front of the town hall in Bad Berleburg, Poststraße 42, there is an information board about the artistic work "The Competition" by Jochen Gerz. This is where the WaldSkulpturenWeg begins. The trail first heads south along Poststraße towards the town center as far as Graf-Casimir-Straße. There, follow the symbols of the WaldSkulpturenWeg: blue gate on a white background, from the direction of the train station and the markings of the Rothaarsteig access path: black horizontal R on a yellow background, to the right. At the end of the road, the small Mühlrainchen path leads uphill to the left.At the top, you come directly to the castle, which is well worth a detour. Turn right along Parkstraße until Fürst-Richard-Straße bends off to the left. At its end, you reach the forest via an avenue of chestnut trees. At the first wooden post on the Forest Sculpture Trail, the trail turns sharply to the right and climbs steeply uphill through Buchenwald: through the forest to the Trufterhain forester's lodge, then across a meadow to the edge of the forest. Here you will find the second work on the art trail, an approx. 6.50 m high golden egg: "What was first?" by Magdalena Jetelová. The location offers a magnificent view of the Odeborn valley with the town center of Bad Berleburg. From here, the trail leads above the long, north-south Oesterze and Lausebach valleys towards the Rothaar ridge. Over the Lauberg you come to Gloria Friedmann's "green station". To the right of the Bärenköpfchen, the path bends to the left and leads to Alan Sonfist's "The Monument of the Lost Falcon". It then runs parallel to the Rothaar ridge to the fifth artistic work, "Stone - Time - Man" by Nils-Udo. To the left, the path leads past the massive work of art onto the Rothaarsteig. Follow it to the right in a northerly direction to the Kühhude hiking parking lot. Continuing along the Rothaarsteig, you reach the sculpture "Kein leichtes Spiel" by Ansgar Nierhoff. Shortly afterwards, the path bends to the left towards Schanze from the Rothaarsteig. A wide, undulating forest path leads past the "Krummstab" by Heinrich Brummack. In the village of Schanze, turn right across the parking lot of the Bräutigam-Hanses inn and, together with the valley variant of the Rothaarsteig, past a section of medieval fortifications. Now continue downhill through the forest, past a steep slope with Buchenwald on the right. At the fork, follow the E1 hiking trail, which bends to the right here. After approx. 200 m you reach the "Hexenplatz", the work of Lili Fischer. The trail continues around the Giersberg to district road 17, which you follow for approx. 100 m to the left (towards Almert) until you reach the hiking trail again on the right. After a short distance, you reach the ninth station of the WaldSkulpturenWeges, the light-kinetic work "Blinker II" by Timm Ulrichs. At the next fork, the path leads to the left and between meadows over ridges. Before descending to Grafschaft, enjoy the view as far as Schmallenberg. Continue through Grafschaft on the sidewalk along district road 17 and turn left behind the huge monastery complex (used by the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Charles Borromeo). The route now loops around the monastery ponds to the tenth station, the sound sculpture "Über den Teichen" by Andreas Öldorp, and back to Kreisstraße 17.Parallel to the road, a path leads through a small meadow valley to the spa gardens in Schmallenberg. Turn right over the bridge, past the sculpture with the golden hare ("Das Blaue Wunder" by Heinrich Brummack), turn left twice in quick succession and then take the path on the right up to the town hall, where you will find another information board about the work "Der Wettbewerb" by Jochen Gerz. And here, Unterm Werth 1, the WaldSkulpturenWeg ends.
We recommend that you bring sturdy shoes and sufficient food and drink.
A rescue point system has been installed in the Hochsauerland district. Rescue points can be found on the information boards at junctions and on hiking signs.
Take a detour to the Kyrill Trail in Schanze.
