The “Westernkottener Warte” brine spring was tapped in 1845. Until 1949, this very productive brine spring was used primarily for salt production. Today, the brine is used exclusively for bathing and for health-promoting open-air inhalation at the two Gradierwerke.
The “Westernkottener Warte” brine spring was tapped in 1845. The borehole is 78 meters deep.
It was discovered by chance at the time, as the original search was actually for rock salt. Instead of finding rock salt, workers were completely surprised to drill into this brine spring, which gushed out of the borehole in a large fountain.
Until 1949, the very productive brine spring was used primarily for salt production and, incidentally, for therapeutic purposes as well. With the cessation of salt production in Westernkotten in 1949 and the founding of Solbad Westernkotten GmbH the following year, in 1950, the transformation of the former salt-producing village of Westernkotten was finally complete. Since then, the brine has been used exclusively for bathing and for health-promoting and health-preserving purposes at the two Gradierwerke.
