Quarry stone masonry requires special skill: each stone has its own shape, each needs the right place and the right neighbors. Despite angular and irregular pieces, the wall should be stable and form a smooth surface - a skill that only a few have mastered.

the Diemelsee-Staumauer dam wall was also built using this demanding technique. The barely weathering diabase required for this was quarried in the immediate vicinity.
Construction began in 1912; 90 experienced quarry masons were recruited from Italy and Serbia. The project was delayed by war and financial bottlenecks - the wall was not completed until 1924.
