Windmill stump Oestereiden

Mill | Historic building

#deinsauerland / Neusta POIs / Windmill stump Oestereiden
The massive tower-like mill stump at the north-western end of the village still documents a medieval right (windmill right), which was once a fief of the Electors of Cologne and belonged to the Freigrafschaft and the noble House of Eden (Oestereiden) and represented a sustainable source of income, as all the farmers in the area were forced to have their grain ground there (so-called Mühlenbann).

It is therefore not surprising that a dispute arose between the Counts of Rietberg and the Noblemen of Büren over these mill rights when the Free County was divided in 1567.

The current windmill was rebuilt by the Counts of Rietberg after the two mill shares were reunited at the beginning of the 17th century. After 1810, it was sold into private hands (the Ringe estate near Oestereiden) and acquired in 1868 by the long-time local mill tenant, who, out of pride of ownership, had the founding coat of arms of the House of Rietberg removed. Operation of the mill was

discontinued

at the end of the 1920s as part of the electrification process.
