The Wilzenberg near Schmallenberg, 658 m high, is one of the most striking mountains in the Sauerland and is shrouded in legend. In the early Middle Ages, a rampart castle is said to have stood here. The rampart ring that can still be seen today near the viewing tower and the weapons found in 1950 (iron swords and spearheads) support this assumption.

From the Wilzenberg tower, you can see the southern part of the Schmallenberg Sauerland with the main ridge of the Rothaargebirge on which the "Rothaarsteig" long-distance hiking trail runs. The village of Oberkirchen can be seen to the west and the Kahler Asten (841 m above sea level) to the left behind it. The telecommunications tower on the Hunau stands out strikingly in the north. Part of the Schmallenberg golf course can be seen in front of it.

The tower was erected in 1889, making it one of the oldest iron observation towers. Both the hexagonal ground plan and the steel framework construction with two platforms make the listed tower an eye-catcher.
