Do you know the Wetterbachtal nature reserve near Holzhausen with its colorful meadows and pastures, wet depressions and herbaceous meadows? Or the near-natural stream with a continuous fringe of alders, willows and ash trees? The wide-open meadow landscape is bordered by hedges and trees towards the edge of the village. There are still some well-preserved orchards here, whose gnarled fruit trees glow white and pink when they blossom in May. For centuries, the floodplain, which is unusually wide for the Siegerland region, has been subject to extensive meadow use, which is becoming increasingly uncommon nowadays.
The area is particularly important for meadow breeders: birds that have disappeared in many places in the modern agricultural landscape due to the lack of flowers and insects. Sometimes even the black stork and the red kite circle above the valley. They nest in the surrounding forests, but find lush hunting grounds here.
You can find out more about this in the natural treasures of South Westphalia.
