In the village of Berlingsen, lime trees flank the memorial. The place of remembrance, public commemoration and collective memory has social significance, symbolizing remembrance, admonition and a call for peace.
as tree monuments, the lime trees are part of this significance of the place. They are special trees in the public space and in the tradition of the village of Berlingsen. Ulrich Möckel chose the lime tree to the right of the memorial to take the shape of the marker from,
using the contour of the lime tree, the unusually meandering outline of the real trunk, as a model for the sculpture, which was made from Corten steel. Erected vertically, it forms a landmark in the landscape and
belongs to the "Contours" group of works. In the past, the artist has outlined trees in various materials as bronze objects on the wall, cast them in concrete, layered them as columns, bent them as neon tubes or turned them into images in graphite drawings and embossed prints.
Ulrich Möckel describes a contour as the outline of a tree trunk at the point where the tree emerges from the earth, i.e. directly on the ground. Contours are - like fingerprints - unique and refer to a very specific tree.
for him, the contour is a kind of lifeline: time that has become form.
