Wanderbahnhof2016:
Werdohl station now officially bears the title of "NRW Wanderbahnhof of the Year 2016". Werdohl came out on top against many competitors in the competition organized by the joint campaign "Buses & Trains NRW". Over 80 cities competed for the title - Werdohl was able to convince the jury led by hiking author Manuel Andrack.

State Secretary Michael von der Mühlen, representing the NRW Ministry of Transport, presented the newly awarded station as a role model for towns and municipalities. Together with Werdohl's mayor Silvia Voßloh, he attached the winning plaque to the station façade.

The station has been one of the starting points of the Sauerland-Höhenflug hiking trail since 2012, making it an ideal starting point for extensive hiking tours.

About the station and the station building:
Werdohl station is a passenger station located on the Ruhr-Sieg line between Hagen and Siegen. The station building was built shortly before the First World War (1914) in neo-baroque style. It is a large two-storey, symmetrically structured building under a mansard roof, with a central risalit. The eaves-standing structure has two risalit-style side wings. The first floor porch in front of the central wing with the main entrance has pillars or pillar templates between the windows with neo-baroque capitals.

There is a large basket-arched window in the central risalit, above which is the station clock in the roof area. Stair tower under a conical roof on the right-hand side façade. The building is plastered except for the rear, this and the plinth, ashlar masonry, roof with cardboard shingles, roof houses and dormers with slate, wooden sash windows largely preserved, entrance doors renewed in modern style.

Werdohl station is located on the line of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn (Prussian state railroad from 1882) from Altena via Finnentrop towards Siegen, which opened on 06.08.1861. For the town of Werdohl, the station reception building is a special document of the development of its transport and economic history, which was given a particular boost by the construction of the Ruhr-Sieg Railway and gave the metal, wire and small goods industries based here a particular boost. The building is also a vivid testimony to representative railroad station architecture before the First World War and in turn allows conclusions to be drawn about the economic importance of the town. Built in an urban orientation towards Bahnhofsstraße, the building is also particularly characteristic of the cityscape. There are scientific and urban planning reasons for its preservation and use, and

the exterior renovation of the building will begin in 2011 with state funds from the Stadtumbau West program, followed immediately by the interior renovation. From the end of 2012/2013, the station, including the extension, will house the city museum, the city archive, a children's art school, the administration of the WOGE housing association and a restaurant.
