Before the dam was built, the village of Asel comprised 30 farms and 175 inhabitants. The village of Asel was blown up by imperial pioneers after it was cleared. A small part of the population settled in what is now Asel-Süd, while others found a new home in Vöhl and the surrounding agriculturally more productive areas.
Today, the 60-metre-long, 4-arched Eder bridge is the best-preserved structure in the old Edertal and reappears when the water level drops below 235.10 meters. It was built between 1887 and 1890 and is now a listed building. When the water on its approaches has dried up, it can be visited and used by hikers and cyclists to cross the Eder.
