The stone weir at Grüner Winkel - witness to an eventful past on the Lippe
A defensive structure and special lifeline for the town The stone weir at Grüner Winkel is a remarkable testimony to the time when Lippe was the most important fortified town between the Rhine and Weser. In the past, weirs were of great historical importance for the moats of a fortified town like Lippstadt. Initially, a wooden weir was sufficient, but as the Altstadt grew, it became necessary to replace it with a solid stone construction.
How the weir in Lippstadt became a bridge At the beginning of Lippstadt's history, there was no need for a weir. The low water volume of the original moat around the year 1220 did not require any regulating measures. As part of the expansion into a fortified town, the existing moat was enlarged and an additional moat was constructed in front of it. A wooden weir was initially built at the site of today's Grüner Winkel in order to regulate the flow of water into the Lippe. In 1711, a robust stone successor structure was built, which had ten culverts with a width of 1.80 meters each. Wooden planks of the appropriate width were used to dam up the water for the moat, which were lowered into the water by means of stable chain constructions.
Der Grüne Winkeln - Natur und Erholung finden The historic stone weir has been preserved to the present day. From this time-honored structure, visitors can enjoy an impressive view of the Grüner Winkeln and the course of the Lippe. This scenery is perfect for taking an atmospheric photo, which can serve as a lasting memory of your stay in Lippstadt. Visit Lippstadt's Steinwehr and let yourself be enchanted by the history and beauty of this place.
