In the year 772, Charlemagne led his Christian Franks against the pagan Saxons, conquered Eresburg (Obermarsberg), and destroyed the Saxons’ sacred site there, the Irminsul. In 785, he had a stone Basilica of St. Peter built on this site and founded a Benedictine monastery. In 1803, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization process.

Today, the Stiftskirche is dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul.

It was expanded around 1250 and converted into a hall church. Destruction during the Thirty Years’ War also destroyed the formerly Gothic—and perhaps even partly Romanesque—interior furnishings.

From around the end of the 17th century until 1725, the sculptors’ workshop of Heinrich and Christophel Papen recreated the church’s interior furnishings, ranging from the pews to the altars, confessionals, and pulpit, all the way to the magnificent organ facade.
