The chapel of St. Katharina in Schmallenberg-Winkhausen was built in the 18th century in a simple Baroque style. A predecessor building probably already existed around 1630. Winkhausen was located on the historic Heidenstraße - an important medieval long-distance route between Cologne and Leipzig.
The baroque altar depicts the patron saint St. Catherine of Alexandria, one of the fourteen holy helpers. The depiction in the left-hand stained glass window shows her with her attribute, the wheel of torture. Other windows show Anna Selbdritt and St. Brigida of Ireland.
All the colorful stained glass windows date from 1980 and were designed by the Herne artist Jupp Gesing.
For centuries, the chapel was an easily accessible place of worship for travelers, pilgrims and villagers. Today, a bench in front of the entrance invites you to linger.
