The church was first mentioned in a document in 1250. It is likely that this church was destroyed during the feuds on the Sintfelde in the 14th or 15th century. Until 1883, a former tithe barn belonging to the Dahlheim Monastery, with an attached choir, served as the church sanctuary. The barn church had no tower; the bells hung from an old linden tree.
In 1892, the neo-Gothic, three-nave, high-vaulted hall church was built of ashlar masonry. The tower stands to the west, and the building is covered with hipped roofs. The towering structure is a defining feature of the townscape.
