St. John's Church, one of Rüthen's two Catholic parish churches, is a three-aisled hall church built in 1872-74 in the neo-Gothic style. The tower and the ante-chapel were rebuilt in 1737. The chapel contains the oldest work of art in Rüthen, the statue of "Maria vom Stein", created from local green sandstone, probably shortly after the town of Rüthen was founded.

The neo-Gothic nave was built with a choir with a 5/8 end and choir side chapels from 1871 to 1874 according to plans by Arnold Güldenpfennig. The choir is decorated with elaborate molding and stained glass from the construction period. In the three-bay nave, ribbed vaults rest on slender round pillars. The side aisles are fitted with diamond vaults. The baroque west tower, built in 1737, faces west. It was built from hammer-right green sandstone with corner ashlar. The rib-vaulted tower hall was opened up to the plain chapel hall and the church. The neo-baroque Marienkapelle in front of the tower was also built at the same time. It is a flat-roofed hall with richly designed window frames. houses the miraculous image of Mary of the Stone.

The organ with pneumatic cone chests was installed in 1894 by Franz Eggert from Paderborn. The front pipes were withdrawn for war purposes in 1917 and replaced in 1920. Siegfried Sauer from Ottbergen electrified the action in 1978 and installed new individual bellows. He extensively restored the organ in 2005. Apart from changes to the names of the stops, the sound system, chest and façade have been preserved in their original condition
