St. James parish church
Zum Osterfeld
59872 Meschede
Construction of the baroque hall church in Meschede-Remblinghausen began in 1754, initiated by Pastor Wilhelm Theodor Stratmann, who had the church built together with master builder Christian Sieger from Grafschaft. After a construction period of ten years, the church was solemnly consecrated.
The current parish church of St. James was built on the foundations of a Romanesque church from the 13th century. This earlier church had room for around 50 worshippers.
Remains of the Romanesque church and the grave of Pastor Stratmann were discovered during the renovation of the heating system in 1980.
The church organ was originally built in 1780 and its historic pipes have been preserved to this day. In 1980/81, however, the instrument was extensively rebuilt, as - with the exception of the façade pipes and a few stops - there was hardly any usable material left. The organ technology from the first half of the 20th century also no longer met the requirements and was completely replaced.
