Protective wall of the town
At a time when wars and raids were the order of the day, strong fortifications were essential for the survival of towns. Lippstadt also invested in the construction of a city wall with several gates from 1450 onwards. One of these gates was the South Gate, which secured access to the town from the south.

Reconstruction and relocation
Over the centuries, Lippstadt's fortifications were repeatedly extended and reinforced. The south gate was also rebuilt around 1680, about 70 meters to the west. This measure served to increase the town's defensive capabilities.

End of an era
With the end of the Seven Years' War, fortress construction became less important. Lippstadt's fortifications were also gradually dismantled. Today, only a few traces of the former demonstration of power remain. Imagine standing in front of the South Gate and looking into the town. What stories might the old walls have to tell?
